Herstory

The herstory of Miss Island Goddess traces back to its roots in the heart of UTOPIA’s vibrant LGBTQIA+ community and its commitment to supporting U.T.O.P.I.A. Seattle (now known as UTOPIA Washington). UTOPIA Washington, an all-volunteer-led organization from 2009 – 2017, has long been dedicated to serving the needs of Indigenous Pasifika queer, trans, and gender diverse communities, and the Miss Island Goddess beauty pageant emerged as a crucial fundraising initiative to support its programs and services.

The inception of Miss Island Goddess pageant dates back to 2010 when it was initially named Miss U.T.O.P.I.A. Seattle. From its early years, the pageant served as a beacon of empowerment and celebration, providing a platform for queer and trans individuals within the LGBTQIA+ community, particularly the Faʻafafine, Leitī, and Māhū community, to showcase their talents, creativity, and cultural heritage.

For the next seven years, from 2010 to 2017, the pageant continued to grow in popularity and significance under the name Miss U.T.O.P.I.A. Seattle. It became an annual event eagerly anticipated by people from various backgrounds, drawing attendees from local, out-of-state, and international communities who gathered to celebrate diversity, inclusivity, and resilience.

In 2018, the pageant underwent a significant transformation, evolving into Miss UTOPIA International. This renaming signaled a broader scope and reach, reflecting the pageant’s commitment to inclusivity beyond Washington and its aspiration to become a global platform for showcasing the beauty, talent, and cultural richness of LGBTQIA+ communities worldwide.

Over the next four years, from 2018 to 2022, Miss UTOPIA International continued to thrive, attracting participants and spectators from diverse backgrounds and regions. The pageant retained its mission of raising funds for UTOPIA Washington’s vital initiatives while amplifying the voices and experiences of queer, trans, and gender diverse communities of color on an international stage.

However, in 2022, the pageant faced a challenge when it had to undergo a rebranding due to trademark and registration issues. Consequently, UTOPIA Washington renamed the pageant to Miss Island Goddess, preserving its essence while adapting to the evolving landscape. Despite the name change, the pageant’s core values remained steadfast, emphasizing inclusivity, cultural celebration, and community support.

Today, Miss Island Goddess stands as a testament to the resilience, creativity, and vibrancy of LGBTQIA+ communities, particularly queer and trans communities of color. It continues to serve as a vital fundraiser for UTOPIA Washington’s programs and services while providing a dynamic platform for drag pageantry through a cultural lens. Each year, hundreds of people from around the world come together to celebrate the beauty, diversity, and unity embodied by Miss Island Goddess and the communities it represents.
