Rooted in Culture is a program designed for diasporic Queer and Trans pacific islanders to thrive in celebrating not only their cultural heritage but also their cultural gender identities as Queer people of the pacific (Fa’afafine, Mahu, Leiti, Palopa, Vakasalewalewa, etc.) Our efforts in creating Rooted in culture with the focus on educating community digitally, has since birthed the practical and hands-on portion of our work entitled “Ala mai.” “Ala mai” is a Samoan phrase that simply translates to “Wake up.” It is through Ala mai that we look to provide this cultural awakening for community members. Ala Mai is a space created for Queer and Trans Pacific Islanders to simply celebrate their cultural heritage through the arts. As we enter the season of giving, our ALA MAI team and participants look to give you a taste of a tropical holiday through our Na Mele I ka lani concert. Let the heavenly voices of our community bring you great cheer as we approach this holiday season.
